Benefits and harms of activating ATF6 in beta cells

US · IL NIH grant awarded #nih-5R01DK135304-04

Summary

This project investigates the benefits and harms of activating the ATF6 pathway in pancreatic beta cells to understand its role in diabetes resistance or susceptibility and to explore its potential as a therapeutic approach.

What they want

The project will explore the causes of beta cell failure after ATF6 activation through in-depth molecular, morphological, and tissue homeostasis experiments. It will determine the cellular and molecular bases for beta cell recovery when ATF6 activation is ceased. Finally, it aims to identify molecular mechanisms driving both beneficial and harmful effects of ATF6 activation to determine conditions under which beneficial responses can be separated from harmful ones for future therapeutic potential in diabetes treatment or prevention.
