Summary

Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus; SA) colonizes >50% of people and causes a wide range of diseases including bacteremia, pneumonia, and surgical site infections. No SA vaccines or immunotherapeutics are approved or in late-stage clinical development. Recent findings revealing the detrimental impact of prior exposure to SA on shaping the immune response to SA vaccine candidates highlight the importance of not only targeting bacterial growth, but also the immune evasion mechanisms of SA as treatment options.
