Summary
Develop and test a decentralized, status-neutral, stakeholder-engaged post-incarceration intervention (DEST2nation model) for people with and at risk for HIV, especially those with substance use disorders, to improve ART and PrEP uptake and adherence post-release.
What they want
The project aims to address the high rates of HIV among incarcerated individuals and the significant drop in viral suppression and PrEP coverage post-release. The DEST2nation model will involve peer navigation and collaboration with carceral-focused community-based organizations to address competing priorities like unstable housing and lack of employment. The R61 phase will pilot and refine decentralized strategies to address barriers for criminal legal system-involved people with HIV and those at risk. The R33 phase will test the DEST2nation model against the standard of care in a multisite randomized control trial and estimate its cost and economic value from healthcare, policymaker, and societal perspectives.
Deliverables
- Refined package of decentralized strategies to address barriers impacting criminal legal system-involved people with HIV and those at risk
- Results from a multisite randomized control trial testing the DEST2nation model vs. standard of care
- Estimates of the cost of implementing and sustaining DEST2nation
- Assessment of the economic value of DEST2nation relative to standard of care
