Summary
This research project aims to optimize the implementation of Whole Health Coaching for Veterans with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) by assessing its impact, identifying barriers and facilitators, and co-designing a best practices toolkit.
What they want
The project involves three specific aims: (1) assessing the impact of Whole Health Coaching on healthcare utilization and smoking cessation outcomes for Veterans with COPD through analysis of CDW data; (2) identifying barriers and facilitators of effective Whole Health Coaching for Veterans with COPD using a realist evaluation framework, including observations, interviews with stakeholders (Veterans, WH Coaches, clinicians), and artifact analysis at six selected VA sites; and (3) co-designing a toolkit with best practices for effective partnership between WH Coaches and Veterans with COPD, involving a group of Veterans, WH Coaches, and clinicians. The researcher also seeks additional training in theory-driven evaluation, complex systems approaches, quantitative research methods, co-design, and implementation/hybrid trials.
Deliverables
- Insights to inform the ongoing rollout of Whole Health Coaching for VHA and VA
- A toolkit with best practices for effective partnership between Whole Health Coaches and Veterans with COPD
- Inform at least three future Investigator-Initiated Research (IIR) projects: a national survey of patient-reported outcomes of WH-Coaching, an expert panel study expanding the toolkit to other complex chronic conditions, and a hybrid implementation-effectiveness trial of the toolkit
