An integrated exercise and bladder training intervention to reduce falls in older women with urinary incontinence

US · IL NIH grant awarded #nih-5R01AG071707-05

Summary

This project aims to establish the effectiveness of a novel, multidimensional intervention combining exercise and bladder training to reduce falls and improve urinary incontinence in older community-dwelling women, particularly minority women in urban communities.

What they want

The project involves conducting a randomized controlled trial with 314 older women with urgency urinary incontinence (UUI). The intervention will address urinary urgency-related anxiety, reduced lower limb muscle strength, poor balance, and environmental hazards through integrated behavioral bladder training, urge suppression techniques, strength and balance exercises, and home hazard assessments. The study will use a community-engagement approach to recruit participants from an urban core community with a high proportion of minorities. The specific aims are to determine the intervention's effect on falls and on UUI in older women.
