PRIMING THE PUMP: TRAINING PHYSICIAN-SCIENTISTS IN TRANSLATIONAL PSYCHIATRY

US NIH grant awarded #nih-2R25MH086466-15A1

Summary

This proposal aims to continue a successful research track program (Columbia RTP) that recruits and retains physician-scientists in translational psychiatry careers.

What they want

The Columbia RTP provides research opportunities across 12 areas (basic science to implementation, dissemination, and policy), early research exposure via a pre-matriculation boot-camp and clinical research unit rotations, intensive mentoring from senior faculty, PIs, and near-peers, 14.5 months of protected time for independent research, customized training in ethics, statistics, research design, and translational research principles, opportunities for combined child and adult psychiatry research training, and seamless entry to postgraduate research fellowships. The program also offers research exposure and skill development for non-RTP residents, all while meeting ACGME clinical training requirements.
Deliverables
  • Research opportunities across 12 areas (basic science to implementation, dissemination, and policy)
  • Early exposure to research through a pre-matriculation boot-camp and rotations on clinical research units
  • Intensive mentoring from senior faculty, PIs, and more senior research residents
  • 14.5 months of protected time for independent research
  • Customized training in ethics, statistics, research design, and principles of translational research
  • Opportunities for combined research training in child and adult psychiatry through a 6-year track
  • Seamless entry to an array of postgraduate research fellowships
  • Training infrastructure providing 'on-ramps' for residents without prior research experience to develop basic research skills and become involved in psychiatry research
Key personnel
  • Senior faculty (for mentoring)
  • PIs (for mentoring)
  • More senior research residents (near-peers for mentoring)

How they evaluate

  • Recruitment and retention of research track residents (RTRs)
  • Percentage of MD/PhDs among RTRs
  • Accomplishments of RTRs, including continued involvement in research and pursuit of research as primary activity (>80% effort)
  • Percentage of RTP graduates with full-time careers in academia
  • Percentage of previous funding cycle graduates securing NIH or Foundation funding as a Principal Investigator
  • Engagement of non-RTP residents in research electives
  • Involvement in research and grant funding received by non-PhD graduates pursuing research fellowships

Risks & flags

Incumbent: Columbia RTP
  • This is a proposal to continue an existing, highly successful research track program (Columbia RTP), indicating it is a renewal application rather than an open competitive solicitation.
